Drives Missing in Storage Settings and App Save Locations Dropdown in Windows 10 [Fix]

The System Storage page in Settings window lists all storage drives along with the disk space used by each drive. You can further drill down the information by selecting a drive letter and see the detailed storage usage by that drive.

If the drives are missing in the Storage Settings window, and under the application Save locations “New apps will save to” drop-down box (grayed out), here is how to fix the problem.

Start the Storage Service

The above issue occurs if the Storage service is stopped. To enable it back, start Services.msc and double-click Storage Service.

Set its start type to Automatic (delayed start), and click the Start button to start the service manually.

Re-open the Storage Settings window, and the drives should now appear. To see if other services are accidentally disabled, refer the Windows 10 Default Services Configuration page.

  1. I’m in the same boat, it shows two of four external hard drives that are used for backups, neither of the other USB drives or the internal secondary drive in the Storage Settings.

All of the drives appear in File Explorer, Device Manager etc.

  2. The service was already running and on delayed start. This didn’t fix the issue. Some harddrives show and others don’t.
