When you open a .txt file using Notepad, it may automatically open all the recent text files you have opened — e.g., files opened yesterday or the day before. When you close all the open files and open Notepad again, it also opens the most recent .txt file.
This behavior is seen in the store version of Notepad that has the tabbed user interface.
Resolution
The Notepad store app has a setting that decides whether to open recent files during launch. Please follow these steps:
- Open Notepad.
- Click on the gear icon in the top right-hand corner of Notepad. The gear icon opens the “Settings” window.
- In Settings, expand “When Notepad starts”. There will be two choices: “Open content from the previous session” and “Open a new window.”
- Select “Open a new window”.
(In older versions of Notepad, the option may be named “Restore the previous session” or “Reopen files from the last session.”)
Close and reopen Notepad.
