Get Old Registry Editor in Windows 10 Creators Update

In Windows 10 Creators Update, the Registry Editor status bar has been removed, as it now has an address bar at the top. The status bar doesn’t appear even if you turn off the address bar in Regedit. Another change is that you can modify the default font face, weight and style in the new the Registry Editor.

If you’re not a fan of the new Registry Editor (Regedit.exe), perhaps for the sole reason that it doesn’t have a status bar, you can get a copy of the old Regedit.exe from a computer running Windows 10 Anniversary Update, or from the ISO.

Get Old Regedit.exe in Windows 10 Creators Update

Here is how to replace the new Regedit.exe with the older (v1607 — Build 14393) version.

1. Download old_regedit.zip which encloses the four files namely regedit_old.exe, regedit_old.exe.mui, replace.reg and undo.reg.

2. Copy regedit_old.exe to C:\Windows. Click Continue when asked for confirmation.

3. Copy regedit_old.exe.mui to C:\Windows\en-us. Click Continue when asked for confirmation.

4. Optionally, to replace the Regedit.exe application path to point to the older version, run the file replace.reg. So when you start the Registry Editor by typing regedit.exe in Run dialog, the old Regedit launches.

The registry file updates the Regedit.exe app paths in this registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths\regedit.exe

And sets the (default) value data to C:\Windows\Regedit_old.exe

To reverse the changes made by the REG file, run the file named “Undo.reg” enclosed in the zip file.

You’ll see the yellow UAC dialog even though the older Regedit.exe (which is now Regedit_old.exe) is a signed Microsoft file.
