KB3194496 14393.222 Failed to Install. Fix it by Deleting XblGameSave Tasks

Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Anniversary Update (V1607) for x64-based Systems (KB3194496) raises the build number to 14393.222. Key changes in this update:

• Improved reliability of the Windows Update Agent, shared drives, virtual private network (VPN), clustering, HTTP downloads, Internet Explorer 11, Hyper-V platform, multimedia playback, and Microsoft Edge.
• Improved performance of push and local notifications, Hyper-V platform, and some social media websites using Microsoft Edge.
• Addressed issue where mapping a drive from an elevated command prompt doesn’t work with administrator credentials.
• Addressed issue causing movies that were ripped using the transport stream (.ts) format to play without sound in Windows Media Player and the Xbox One Media Player app.
• Addressed issue causing the Movies & TV app on the Xbox to stop working when attempting to play content that was just purchased from the Store.
• Addressed issue where ActiveX can’t be installed when using the ActiveX Installer Service (AXIS) in Internet Explorer 11.

KB3194496 fails to install repeatedly? – Delete the XblGameSave task(s)

Update: October 5 2016

Microsoft has made available a script to fix KB3194496 installation issues. The installer file UpdateRegistry.msi (encapsulates a CMD file and a PowerShell script) when run, takes ownership of the XblGameSave Task registry keys and clears them so that the update KB3194496 (14393.222) can install successfully. Then it removes the task file “XblGameSaveTask” from the “XblGameSave” folder.

In short, the script automates the procedure described below.

Fix it manually

If KB3194496 installation is failing to install every time, use the fix below:

Start Regedit.exe and go to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Schedule\TaskCache\Tree\Microsoft\XblGameSave

Export the key to a REG file

Under that key, there are two tasks listed. You’ll need to clear them both. For detailed information, post Deleting a Task Using the Registry Editor to delete tasks cleanly. If you encounter access denied error when deleting the keys, then take ownership of the registry keys and then try clearing them.

Or you may use the excellent Autoruns utility to delete the task.

Once the tasks are cleared, delete the corresponding task files namely “XblGameSaveTask” and “XblGameSaveTaskLogon” in the following folder:

C:\Windows\System32\Tasks\Microsoft\XblGameSave

That’s it! You should be able to install KB3194496 successfully now.
